Exploring One Mile Jetty with Trace’s Heritage Team

The picturesque One Mile Jetty in Carnarvon recently provided the backdrop for an exciting archaeological exploration by Trace’s Heritage Team. Last week, our team of anthropologists and archaeologists set out on a fascinating survey, eager to uncover any hidden heritage beneath the muddy mangroves. Working closely with cultural consultants from the Yinggarda Aboriginal Corporation, our mission was to assess the area for potential fish traps and other significant heritage features.

The survey aimed to ensure that the Department of Transport’s proposed refurbishment of the jetty would not inadvertently affect any Aboriginal Cultural Heritage. We were pleased to discover that the refurbishment plans posed no threat to the rich history embedded in the area. However, we did come across some curious relics, such as old bottles, which may eventually sink deeper into the mud, awaiting discovery by future generations.

Equipped with our trusty drone, the team concluded the survey with a breathtaking fly-over along the length of the jetty. This aerial view offered stunning visuals where the river meets the ocean, capturing the natural beauty of the area and adding a new dimension to our understanding of the landscape.

The One Mile Jetty survey was not only an opportunity to engage with the land but also a chance to connect with the local community. Working alongside the Yinggarda cultural consultants, we were privileged to hear special stories that enriched our appreciation of the site.
